Thanks for this excellent recommendation, Rachel. Like you, I'm not a great fan of short stories (unless it's Claire Keegan!) but I got this from the library last week and you're so right, it's brilliant - and so beautifully structured.

Oh Mary, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I must make sure I read more of her back catalogue this year. Such an amazing writer.

I haven't read all that many, but I always enjoy them. Have you read Bilgewater? Such a brilliant teen read before YA was invented.

No! I've just read this and the Old Filth series. I've got a lot of catching up to do!

Thank you for this recommendation. Although I have long been a fan of Jane |Gardam (and short stories) I had never heard of this title. I'll be looking out for it from now on.

This is such a delightful write up. I wish I had been the lucky one to find it in the Oxfam bookshop! I also struggle with short stories as I often find myself tiring of the same voice but this sounds varied enough to dodge that issue.

Jane Gardam is so good and deserves more attention. I need to reread some of hers. Perhaps a Jane Gardam reading event is in order!
